Interview / Assessment Centre
Following submission, all applications deemed eligible will proceed to be scored and ranked nationally; candidates will then be invited to assessment in order of ranking. Where assessment centre capacity allows, and candidate application score is sufficient, eligible candidates will be invited to assessment at their first-choice UoA.
If a candidate is deemed eligible for interview, but all available places at their first-choice UoA have been taken by candidates whose applications achieved higher scores, the candidate will then be considered for assessment at their second-choice UoA. Should their second-choice UoA’s capacity also be taken up by higher-scoring candidates, the candidate will be considered by their third-choice UoA, and so on.
Candidates deemed to be both eligible and suitable for CMT will be invited to interview from Wednesday 19th May onwards. Candidates can book themselves into an interview slot using the online application system once an invitation has been received; please note that all candidates invited to interview will be given at least five days' notice before their interview date where possible, unless a last-minute interview vacancy arises and is then offered to them.
Nationally, UoAs across England & Wales can begin interviewing eligible and suitable candidates from Wednesday 19th May onwards. The exact dates at which deaneries will begin interviewing candidates will vary from one deanery to the next, due to a variety of factors, and we will make these dates available on our website as and when we receive them.
Documentation required for the assessment centre
1. Eligibility documentation:
You will be required to bring a number of documents to demonstrate your eligibility and suitability for a CMT post, including:
- photographic personal identification (passport, photo-card driving licence, national ID card etc.)
- documentation confirming your address (i.e. recent utility bill or bank/building society statement)
You will need to bring either two forms of photo ID and one confirming your address, or one of photo ID and two documents showing your address. In addition to this ID, other requirements for interview are:
- UK/EEA applicants must provide their passport (plus any naturalisation papers necessary)
- Evidence you are registered with, and licensed by, the GMC; or confirmation that you will be eligible for unrestricted GMC registration and licensing from the post start date
- Original Medical Degree Certificate
- Proof of language skills
- Evidence of achievement of Foundation competency (see for more information)
Please take two photocopies of these eligibility documents with you to interview, along with the originals.
Then for the interview, collate all original documents and copies in a folder, with your full name, GMC number and applicant ID clearly marked on the front. The deanery co-ordinating your interview will provide more instructions on how to present this information nearer to the time of interview.
Please note that the interviewing deanery may also have additional (or different) forms of documentation that they require you to bring to your interview. If this is the case, they will contact you separately via email to inform you.
2. Evidence Summary Form and Evidence Folder:
For Station 1 of the interview, you are required to bring any evidence you have quoted on the application form. The interviewers will wish to see this evidence. In order to make the evidence easier to find, and to be fair to all applicants, we are asking you not to bring your personal training portfolio to interview. Instead, you must bring to the interview an 'Evidence Folder', which shows all the evidence you have quoted on your application form, in the order in which it is quoted. Please try to use any original documents, but copies may be acceptable.
Please note that it is not necessary to bring duplicate copies of this 'portfolio' documentation for your Evidence Folder.
Available for download from the Downloads page of this website is an evidence summary form, which you can use as a checklist at the front of your Evidence Folder.
On the day
As is customary for a job interview, arrive in plenty of time, both to allow for any delays en route to the centre, and to allow for any preparation you wish to do beforehand.
You will book in at the registration desk. You will then be asked to attend the document checking section, where your eligibility documents will be checked (although in some instances, the document checking may be done after your interview).
The interview will be run on the ‘Multiple Mini Interview’ format, as in previous years, with candidates scoring different marks for a variety of skills at each different station. Each of these three 10 minute stations will have 2 interviewers who mark independently. There is a five-minute break between each station; thus from beginning to end, the interview should take approximately 40 minutes.
Please note that some UoAs may have a fourth station (used for piloting questions or gathering data for local use), in which case the interview may last longer. The deanery will inform you in advance of this if need be.
For further information on the interviews process, please see the UoAs/Deaneries section of our website, and our Applicants’ Guide.

* Mersey Deanery will not be participating in CMT Recruitment Round 2, as their CT1 posts were filled during Round 1.
** Unlike in Round 1, Wales will act as one Unit of Application (UoA) in Round 2. Following application, candidates will be able to state preferences for rotations in North, (South) East or (Mid & South) West Wales. As can be seen from the table, these areas will also have separate interview dates; candidates can elect to be interviewed in a particular region if they wish.
Please note that at this stage, all information in the table above is highly likely to change between now and Round 2 opening (30th March). Post numbers, interview dates, and participation of deaneries is subject to change. Information has been added here for information only; this table will be updated as and when more information becomes available.
For information on the number of posts vs number of applications for each deanery/UoA in 2009 recruitment, please see our UoAs/Deaneries page.
