East Midlands Postgraduate School of Medicine (North)
Core Medical Training in the East Midlands (North)
The Core Medical Training (CMT) programme for the Northern division of the East Midlands Healthcare Workforce Deanery (EMHWD) covers a number of hospitals in Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire, and builds on the traditional excellence of training in medicine in the East Midlands region. The rotations include posts from rotations previously based at:
- Nottingham University Hospitals (Queen's medical centre and Nottingham City Hospital)
- The Derby Road Hospital (formerly Derby Royal Infirmary and Derby City Hospitals)
- United Lincolnshire Hospitals (Lincoln County Hospital, Grantham Hospital, and Pilgrim Hospital, Boston)
- King's Mill Hospital Mansfield
- Chesterfield Hospital
The training programme is split into two zones to minimise travelling for trainees - the Nottingham-Lincolnshire Zone, and the Mansfield-Derby-Chesterfield Zone. The two-year CMT programme delivers training based upon the JRCPTB CMT Curricula, and all rotations involve training posts at both district general hospitals and teaching hospitals, with a majority of the rotations involving at least twelve months at a teaching hospital.
All training paths offer experience in a wide range of medical specialties, as well as excellent exposure to acute medicine. All rotations consist of 6 x 4-month posts. Successful applicants are asked to express a preference between the different rotations/ training pathways, to suit individual interests and career plans. Allocation is on the basis of expressed preference and interview score.
Educational Opportunities
The School of Medicine is justifiably proud of its educational record and the diverse opportunities it offers. The educational component of the CMT programme is underpinned by the following principles:
- Education is the key component of the CMT programme. Although it can be difficult to balance the educational and service components of a post, investment in education is likely to improve the service by enabling the recruitment of high calibre candidates, maintaining their motivation and producing well-informed doctors.
- By offering an educational programme that delivers over and above the standards of the Postgraduate Medical Education Training Boards (PMETB), and provides more than other deaneries, we will aid the recruitment of high-calibre trainees to the region.
- We will take a didactic approach to ensure a uniformly high standard of education throughout the region.
To this end, the programme offers the following educational opportunities:
- Guaranteed weekly three-hour bleep-free formal teaching
- Formal teaching to include a mix of interactive, peer-led and trainer-led teaching
- An additional 30 minutes per week of firm-based teaching for trainees within that firm. This opportunity will be used to ensure that specialty-relevant core competencies have been covered
- Each trust to provide at least three hours of PACES teaching per week in the four weeks prior to the PACES examination
- We give each trainee the opportunity to undertake one two-week elective period per year. This will allow the trainee to explore and area of medicine outside their programme
In addition to this, there are a number of central teaching sessions held which include:
- One whole-day mandatory training session per year at the Trent Skills and Simulation centre
- Year-specific full-day central teaching sessions on topics such as immunology, psychiatry, genetics, oncology, NHS management
- Four-monthly trainee-led Clinico-pathological conferences in the trainee's current speciality
Research and audit
The teaching hospitals within the region have an excellent record in research and a large number of ongoing research projects. Trainees are offered an academic mentor in addition to an education supervisor and clinical supervisor.
All trusts have an actively supported programme of audit; CMT trainees are expected to undertake audit and are actively supported to do so.
Trainee Involvement
Trainees are actively represented at all levels of CMT activity with a Trainees Committee that is represented at CMT Committee meetings.
