East of England

The East of England (EoE) Deanery seeks to provide doctors in training with experience in the core medical specialties across all twenty trusts in the EoE region. Recruitment and allocation are supervised by the Core Medical Training Committee and appointments made are for two years, usually following on from Foundation Year 2. The majority of the posts are held in the same trust for the two years, during which it is usual for junior doctors to gain experience in the following specialties: Cardiology, Care of the Elderly, Endocrine & Diabetes, Gastroenterology, and Respiratory Medicine.

In addition, a number of our trusts offer rotations in Renal Medicine, Stroke Medicine, Oncology, Rheumatology, and Haematology. Each trust has a long record of running popular and successful SHO rotations and this experience has been transferred to their CMT rotations. The two teaching hospitals in the region, Addenbrooke's and Norfolk & Norwich, are major contributors to these rotations, with Addenbrookes offering linked rotations with Hinchingbrooke Hospital, Papworth Hospital and West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds.

All CMT posts provide experience in acute medicine through their on-call rotas, and all acute sites have Emergency Admission Units. It is expected, therefore, that trainees will acquire competence in all aspects of the CMT curriculum by the end of the second year, and it is hoped that all will have gained full membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) by that time.

Progress is assessed by the Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) when each trainee is reviewed personally, with electronic-based assessments at other times during the rotations. This is based on the e-portfolio system, administered by the JRCPTB and facilitated by the Deanery.
