Co-ordinated Holding of Offers
28-Jan-2010Over the coming weeks, deaneries in England & Wales will begin making CMT offers to candidates (in addition to, of course, many other specialties across all UK deaneries beginning to make offers of posts as well.) In most cases, candidates must respond to any CMT offer they receive within 48 working hours (i.e. within 2 days, not including weekends and bank holidays); however, there are certain circumstances where the offer could be held beyond this 48-hour period:
Between co-ordinated CT1/ST1 specialties
Recruitment offers between the specialties of CMT (England & Wales), General Practice (all UK), Psychiatry (England only), and Paediatrics / Child Health (England & Wales) will be co-ordinated in 2010.
That is to say, if you receive an offer from any one of these four specialties, but are awaiting the outcome of an application made to another of these four, you may hold the original offer for longer than the standard 48-hour limit.
Please note that both the offer you are made, and the offer you are waiting for must be from these four participating specialties (within the relevant devolved nations, as noted). If this is not the case, the standard time limit will apply to the offer. So for example, a candidate who receives a CMT offer cannot hold it beyond the usual 48-hour limit if awaiting the outcome of an application made to O&G, for instance.
Between co-ordinated devolved UK nations
There is an agreement in place between CMT recruitment in England/Wales (i.e. the co-ordinated process served by this website) and CMT recruitment in Scotland to allow offers to be held in a similar manner to the above.
Thus, if a candidate receives an offer of a CMT post from England/Wales, but is awaiting the outcome of a CMT application made to a Scottish Deanery, they may hold the England/Wales CMT offer for longer than the usual 48-hour period.
The reverse also applies - Scottish offers may be held beyond their usual time limit if a candidate is awaiting the outcome of a CMT application made to England/Wales.
Please note that this agreement applies only to CMT offers; thus a candidate made a CMT offer by and English/Welsh Deanery could not hold it beyond 48-hours if they were awaiting the outcome of a GP application made to Scotland, for example.
IMPORTANT - PLEASE NOTE
- Wherever a candidate wishes to hold an offer beyond the 48-hour limit, under the above conditions, they must inform the deanery of their intentions. Not doing so will cause the deanery to assume the candidate has declined their offer; as such, both the candidate's application and the deanery's offer will be withdrawn
- The two situations described above are independent of each other. The agreement between the four participating specialties applies only to CMT applications in England & Wales; similarly, the agreement between England/Wales and Scotland applies only to CMT
- Only one offer can be held beyond the 48-hour limit at one time; thus, if a candidate receives two offers from two participating specialties, but wishes to wait for an offer from a third specialty, they must decide which of the two offers they wish to hold, and then reject the other
- When a candidate is made an offer that they wish to accept, the GMC's Good Medical Practice suggests that they should a) withdraw all other pending applications they have made, and b) not subsequently withdraw from the post they have accepted, where possible
- ALL HELD OFFERS MUST BE ACCEPTED OR REJECTED BY MIDDAY ON WEDNESDAY 24th MARCH 2010. This is regardless of whether candidates have yet heard the outcome of any other applications they have made, and regardless of all the conditions described here
