DH contingency in event of flu pandemic

10-Nov-2009

In the event of a national emergency involving spread of pandemic 'flu across the UK, the DH has put in place contingency plans so as to minimise the effect on medical training recruitment - scheduled to take place over winter & spring in 2009/10.

Should this occur, the agreed recruitment process for CMT will remain in place. Depending upon the severity of the outbreak, the timescale for the recruitment process would be extended, possibly into June 2010 if it is warranted. Should an outbreak and its impact be particularly severe, consideration would be given to changing rotation start dates from August 2010 to September 2010.

If necessary, the system of co-ordinated offers between CMT (England & Wales), GP (all UK), Psychiatry (England), and Paediatrics/Child Health (England & Wales) would be suspended so as to give greater flexibility to the timescale of each specialty.

The DH and RCP would ensure that all CMT applicants and deanery staff are kepy fully-informed at all times.
