Recruitment Process 2010

This section of the website will contain a summary of each stage of the recruitment process for 2010 CMT posts - specifically with reference to Round 2.

Please note that the process of recruitment to 2010 CMT posts in Round 2 is largely the same as in Round 1; hence the information contained within this section is also largely the same as it was for Round 1.

Click on the heading of each section to be taken to a dedicated page for that area:

We would like to stress that the national process of recruitment to 2010 CMT posts will not require candidates to sit a knowledge test.

Please be aware that the information on this website will be a précis of each area. For comprehensive guidance and information on any and all stages and areas of recruitment to CMT 2010, please see the 2010 CMT Applicants' Guide: Round 2, available for download from the Downloads page of this website.

Recruitment Round 2

Please note that CMT Round 1 and Round 2 are essentially independent of each other. As such, candidates can apply in Round 2 without having applied to CMT in Round 1. Also, where candidates did apply in Round 1, their R1 application will have no bearing on their R2 application.

Please note that this does mean that all candidates applying to R2 will need to submit a new application; candidates cannot simply re-submit their R1 application. However, candidates will still be able to access and view their R1 applications, and so will be able to copy the text from there if they so wish.

One important change from Round 1 is that not all England/Wales UoAs/deaneries will participate in Round 2. Where a UoA/deanery has filled all of its available vacant CT1 posts in the first round of CMT recruitment, there will obviously be no need for them to participate in a second round of recruitment - and hence that deanery would not be available for candidates to select as an option while applying.

We will make all information on participating deaneries/UoAs, their post numbers, interview dates, etc. available on this website as and when we have this information confirmed.

What can I do to prepare?

For those who did not apply to CMT in Round 1 - find out as much as possible about CMT - ask CMT trainees, medical specialty trainees and consultants about the specialty and where it might lead - there are a further 30 medical sub-specialties! You can also visit the RCP website (www.rcplondon.ac.uk), and individual deanery websites. For more information on training in medical specialties, speak to your Postgraduate department or deanery careers advisor.

Consider where you might apply - please examine historical competition ratios from 2009 CMT recruitment, such as those found on our website. Please note that these should be used for guidance only, but it is almost always the case that London tends to be oversubscribed.

Please note that the competition ratios described above are from 2009 Round 1 – competition was a little more even in Round 2, however the relative popularity of different deaneries remained largely the same. Deaneries with few vacancies are likely to be much more competitive.

Examine the desirable criteria in the CMT CT1 Person Specification, and the short-listing criteria in the Applicants’ Guide. There is no need to spend money on courses to fill in application forms and how to perform at interview – most applicants manage just as well without this.  It is of course sensible to prepare in advance, as advised here.

For those who did apply in Round 1 - seek out feedback on your Round 1 application, including both the form and any interview you attended. Colleagues and supervisors may be able to advise on strengths and weaknesses of your R1 application, which will aid in your application to Round 2.

Our aim with this website is to communicate as much information, guidance and advice to candidates as is possible – thus we would advise checking this website regularly.  Any important updates will be registered under the News section on the homepage.
